Mrs. Zula Elizabeth McFadyen Barton, 85, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Carrol S. Roberson Hospice Center in Fayetteville.
Zula was born in Fayetteville on May 6, 1927, the daughter of J. Scott McFadyen Sr. and Hattie Currie McFadyen. She attended the Fayetteville city schools and was graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1945. She then attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.
On October 11, 1947, Zula was married to Reginald McCarroll Barton Sr. of Eufaula, Alabama.
A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, she was active in the work of Presbyterian Women, including serving as president and receiving both the Service and Life Membership awards from that organization. Throughout her life, she participated in many other activities at her church.
Zula chaired the Fayetteville Beautiful Tour of Homes for two years and was active in the LaFayette Garden Club, the Cotillion Club, The Assembly and her book club. She enjoyed playing bridge, both with her girlfriends and, with her husband, in a coupleâs bridge group.
She was keenly interested in local history, and her ancestry included several members of the Argyll Colony of 1739, the first group of settlers of any size to locate in the current Cumberland County area. She was proud of her heritage as a descendent of the McFadyens of Long Street, the Presbyterian Church that anchored an early Scottish community in an area incorporated into Fort Bragg when it was first established. She was dedicated to her family, cherished her many friends and loved her hometown of Fayetteville.
In addition to her parents and an infant brother, she was predeceased by a niece, Brenda C. McFadyen.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Reginald M. Barton Sr.; a daughter, Linda B. Tillman and husband, Warren L. Tillman, of Fayetteville; a son, Reginald M. Barton Jr. of New York; a grandson, Warren Scott Tillman and wife, Lauren R. Tillman, of Strasburg, Pa.; a great-grandson, Ian Wells Tillman of Strasburg; a brother, J. Scott McFadyen Jr. and wife, Julia T. McFadyen; a sister-in-law, Virginia M. Rose and husband, John M. Rose; three nephews, J. Malcolm McFadyen and wife, Mona P. McFadyen, William C. McFadyen and wife, Susanna H. McFadyen, and John S. McFadyen, all of Fayetteville, as well as two great-nieces; four great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, in First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, by Dr. Larry Toney and Dr. Donna Fowler-Marchant, with interment to follow in Cross Creek Cemetery No. 3.
The family will receive guests from 5 to 7 tonight, Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Services & Crematory of Fayetteville.
