Virginia “Ginny” Lloyd, 77, passed away peacefully at home in Fayetteville on January 11th after a battle with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother to her family and a friend to all she met.
She was born and raised in Passaic, NJ. She filled her youth at the lake with lifeguarding, swimming, and diving with her three siblings. Loving and caring for others came naturally to her leading to a career in nursing where she graduated from Mercer County Community College. She met her husband Howard at Ft. Dix, NJ, starting a lifelong love story. Her life became filled with world travels thanks to Howard and the Army (US, Germany, Egypt, Japan). She was a nurse and stay at home mom. She went back to school after being a stay at home mom and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Fayetteville State University while working as a school nurse for Cumberland County Schools. After retiring, she joined the Guardian Ad Litem volunteer program and was one of the longest serving volunteers (14 years) as a voice for children in the courts.
Ginny was loving, generous, outgoing, and a humble and unselfish soul. She was always thinking of others. Ginny taught others to see life in a more adventurous way. She led an active life: swimming, cycling, tennis. She was an avid runner for 38 years, completing nine marathons. She loved being outside doing yardwork. She was the best pen pal you could ever have and her love of card making and letter writing kept her busy and in touch with all. Ginny was an active member of Haymount United Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees and supporting a variety of mission projects.
Ginny is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Howard. Ginny is survived by her children Danielle Lafferty (Joshua) of Vienna, VA, Jacqueline Tanenbaum (Drew) of Parkton, MD, and Kristen Lloyd of Raleigh, NC, grandchildren Reagan and Cameron Lafferty and Jacob and Weston Tanenbaum, and her siblings Robert, Geraldine, and Christine.
The family wishes to thank all those who have offered prayers, support, and encouragement during her illness. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, January 21st from 5 to 7 PM at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 AM on Wednesday, January 22nd at Haymount United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haymount UMC (specifically the Zoe Empowers organization) or the American Cancer Society.
