U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret) Frederick âPatâ Carl Patton, 89, of Fayetteville passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on June 30, 1925 in Wichita Falls, TX, to the late Finis Carl Patton and Thelma Johnson Patton.
As a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam his military career spanned 3 decades. He completed the Special Forces Officer Course as a 1st Lt. on November 13, 1954 in Fort Bragg, N.C. and was assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group Airborne.
As XO of B Detachment B-110 - 1st SF Group from Okinawa, he organized and trained the first LDDB teams in Nha Trang SVN for Project Delta (later B-52) in June and July 1964. He would later join MACV (SOG), was FOB 1 commander - until July 1967, much of his tours were in the region of Khe Sanh, Ban Me Thuot and Laos, his last tour of duty was in Savannakhet Laos in 1970 - 1971.
During his military career he received numerous medals and commendations to include two Bronze Stars. He was also a lifetime member of MacPherson Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder and a deacon.
He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Lewis Patton, and one sister Lurlene Craver. He is survived by one daughter Lee Anne Patton Russell, and husband Peter Ciaccio, of Whispering Pines, NC; and two sons - Michael Carl Patton, of Holly Springs, NC and John Martin Patton, of Fayetteville, NC; two granddaughters Erin Russell, of Whispering Pines, NC and Shannon Russell, of Cary, NC; Heather Burks, his niece, of Denver CO, also lived with Joyce and Pat who they raised as their own daughter from the age of nine.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to services at MacPherson Presbyterian Church. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at MacPherson Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Randall officiating. Burial will follow in MacPherson Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
