U.S. Army Retired Colonel Robert Anthony Mountel, 84, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away on Sunday June 22, 2014 at Heartfields of Cary.
He was born on April 25, 1930 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Eugene Mountel and Helen Rentz Mountel. He was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Mountel and his only brother Colonel William Mountel.
Colonel Mountel was a Vietnam War Veteran and spent the majority of his military career serving with Special Forces units. His service included assignments with the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Special Forces Groups (serving as commander of the 5th Special Forces Group), and being a founding member of the elite counter-terror unit Blue Light. He retired with over 30 years of honorable service into a civil service position at Fort Bragg and finally the owner of a private consulting business. Bob Mountel was the recipient of numerous medals and commendations to include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star (2d Oak Leaf Cluster).
He is survived by his loving wife, Claire Mountel, of the home; his three daughters, Susan Polizzi, and husband Dr. Lou Polizzi, of Auburndale, FL, Elizabeth Drago, and husband Colonel John Drago, of West Point, NY, and Magi Wilson, and husband John Wilson, of Cary, NC; and his son, Steven Mountel, of Wooster, OH as well as his nine grandchildren, Christina and Anthony Polizzi, Johnny, Julia, and Nicole Drago, Brendan and Eric Mountel, and Michael and Johnnie Wilson.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the JFK Chapel on Fort Bragg. The Burial will follow with the rendering of full military honors at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC.
