Colonel Mary B. Dickey, USA retired, 61, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in her home surrounded by her family. She lost her five year battle with carcinoid cancer.
Mary was born January 22, 1952 in Jersey City, NJ, to, the late Ed and Ruth Buse. She grew up on Palisade Avenue, with a view of the Empire State Building from her front window. She attended PS 8. She started her 46 year career in health care as a candy stripe while in high school and graduated from Dickinson High School 1969. In 1973 she received a BS in nursing from Trenton State and was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps.
She served in a variety of assignments in both the US and Germany. While on active duty she earned two masters degrees from Boston University, one in nursing and the other in education. Her last duty assignment was as assistant chief nurse Womack Army Medical Center. She retired in 1998.
From then until 2012 she taught nursing a Fayetteville State University. She was in charge of the RN to BSN program.
She was extremely active in the community. Among her favorites were getting her boys through Cub Scouts and as Girl Scout leader for her daughter. She also enjoyed serving as an usher at the Cape Fear Regional Theater and seeing the productions.
Since 2008, she has served as a board member of the Cape Fear Valley Board of Trustees. She was keenly interested in being a representative for nurses and nursing issues.
She is survived by her husband Chris, her daughter Katherine, sons Thomas and Christopher, all of Fayetteville, her sister Natalie Martin of Richmond VA and her German family of Inge and Reinhard Morlock, and their sons Thomas, Uli, Matheus, and Jurg. She lived with them as an exchange student in 1971 and became part of the family and was the their big sister.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 12:45 to 1:45p.m. at Sullivan Funeral Service.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service chapel with Chaplain Archie Barringer officiating.
Services to conclude with the rendering of full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Patrick F. Taylor Hope Lodge New Orleans, the Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network, or as she would enjoin you, "Give blood!"
