Roger Dale Holmes, born on May 27, 1953 (70) died on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at his home in Gray’s Creek, North Carolina with family by his side. Born in Sampson County to George and Bessie Holmes, Roger was the sixth of seven children, the baby boy, and some would say the favorite. They were a family of humble sharecroppers, which is where Roger’s love for the outdoors and tractors began. Roger played Varsity football for, and graduated from Hope Mills High School in 1971. He spent most of his career with Western Publishing Company where he met his wife, Donna. With determination, hard work and help from family and dear friends, Roger built his home in Gray’s Creek where he raised his family and lived out his life. Roger attended Robeson Community College and Fayetteville Technical Community College where he earned Associate Degrees in General Occupational Technology, HVAC, and Electrical/Electronics Technology after his time at Western Publishing. He had many talents, and was a jack of all trades. He loved learning new things, building and fixing things himself and sharing his talents with his friends.
Roger was a private man that led a simple life. He loved his family and friends, and touched the lives and hearts of many. Some of his passions were the outdoors, wildlife, sports, tractors, cooking, entertaining family and friends, and overall enjoying the fruits of his labor. A special thank you to all who knew Roger, and for the help, dedication, love, compassionate care, and sharing in the life of this unique man. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bessie Holmes, sister, Doris Holmes Jackson, and brothers, Thomas Holmes, and Marshall Holmes. Left to celebrate his life are his wife, Donna Payne Holmes of Hope Mills, NC; one daughter and son-in-law, Taylor Elease Vega and Chase Vega of Hope Mills, NC; sisters, Mavis Cronon, Wilma Sewell, and Linda Cain of Hope Mills, NC; nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.
As per his wishes, there will be no formal service but instead we invite you to join the family for a Luau to toast in celebration of Roger’s life at The Barn on July 8, 2023 at 5pm.
In lieu of flowers, he requested that any donations be made to UNC Hospital Cancer Center or the Humane Society.
