The Reverend Amos Henry Stone of Fayetteville died Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Village Green Rehab and Health Care Center.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 12, 1921, he was the only son of Lena Estelle Knight and Wilbur Amos Hooker and the stepson of Meredith Henry Stone. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a quartermaster 3rd class aboard a submarine chaser and returned home to graduate from Wake Forest College. He attended Westminster Theological Seminary and pastored churches in Hyde County, Wilson, Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Raleigh, Warsaw, Hertford, and Rowland.
For fifty years he was married to Lorraine Kronholm Stone, who preceded him in death in 1995. He leaves behind three daughters, Susan (and John) Henley of Fayetteville, Mary (and Douglas) Henley of Village of Loch Lloyd, Missouri, Daphne (and Robert) Staggs of Waynesville; one son, Henry (and Ann) Stone of Peachtree City, Georgia; and five grandchildren, Emily and Chris Henley, Brittany and Courtney Stone, and Glenn Staggs.
He was a child of the depression, who learned early the value of hard work, and who loved nothing so much as working the soil with his hands. His churches were at times in rural settings where he enjoyed getting to know first hand many of the farmers in his community. He loved to make people laugh and was a âbitâ of a joker. He was a sports fan, who followed fellow alumnus Arnold Palmerâs career, and relished any victory of Wake over UNC. He enjoyed refereeing basketball and umpiring baseball. His children are grateful for his service to the Methodist church, his love of music and singing, and for the values of love and faith which he has passed on to them.
The family will receive friends at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2015, with the memorial service officiated by Reverend Dennis Goodwin following at 11:00 AM.
