Retired Army Major Walter J. Campbell, 81, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service in Fayetteville. Burial with full military honors will be at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
Our precious and dear husband, father, grandfather, and brother was born on May 6, 1932 in Henryetta, OK to the late Walter Randall Campbell and Katharin Tunnell Campbell. Walt (Jean) retired from the Army after 22 years of service during which time he served in both Korea and Vietnam twice, receiving multiple honors and medals including the Soldierâs Medal, Combat Infantry Badge (2nd Awd), and Bronze Star. He was an active member of the Special Forces Association.
After retiring from the US Army, Walt taught JROTC for 18 years at Lumberton Senior High School in Lumberton. After retiring again, he volunteered for 19 years with the American Red Cross at Womack Army Medical Center and with the Clan Campbell Society of North America for 35 years in various positions culminating as a Trustee. He will be deeply missed by everyone he met and knew.
Walt was a lovingly devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He and his wife, Carolyn (Jody), celebrated 59 years of love, marriage, and memories in October. He is survived by four children, Deborah K. Betts and her husband, Keith, of Sanford, Jeana L. Sanner of Wake Forest, Walter J. Campbell and his wife, Mary Jane, of San Jose, CA, and Mark T. Campbell of Boonville; six grandchildren, Carrie Hames and her husband, Joshua, of Morrisville, Carolyn Campbell of Denver, CO, Rebecca Campbell, Walter Campbell, and Zachary Campbell, all of San Jose, CA, and Matthew Campbell of Huntersville. Walt is also survived by his sister, Ann Sorlie and her husband, Hal, of San Diego, CA, and his brother, Larry Campbell and his wife, Reedy Sue, of Henryetta, OK.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Amedisys Hospice Care of Raeford, the Family Medicine Clinic and the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, both at Womack Army Medical Center, for their professional and compassionate care and services. They also wish to express gratitude and appreciation to the numerous relatives, friends, and neighbors who provided prayers, loving kindness, and support.
