Reginald Barton, Sr.

REGINALD “Reggie” McCARROLL BARTON, SR. of Fayetteville, NC, died on January 30, 2016.  He was 93 years of age.

Born on August 15, 1922 in Eufaula, Alabama, Reggie was the son of William Eason Barton and the former Gertrude Foy McCarroll.  He was educated in the Eufaula city schools and graduated from Eufaula High School in 1940.  In the fall of 1940, he entered Auburn University.  His studies at Auburn were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the US Army as a first lieutenant.  He was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC during his time in service; and while there, he met his future wife, Zula Elizabeth McFadyen.  After the end of the war, Reginald returned to his studies and was graduated from Auburn in 1947, with a BS degree in Civil Engineering.

On October 11, 1947, Reggie and Zula were married in a ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville.  Reggie took a position with Western Electric Company in Burlington, NC.  But they returned to Zula’s beloved hometown of Fayetteville in 1949.  After moving to Fayetteville, he worked for a short while with Ziegler Construction Company.  In the early 1950’s, Reggie founded Barton Poultry Farms, a wholesale egg distribution company, which he operated in Seventy-First Township of Cumberland County until his retirement in 1977.

Reggie was a former member of the Fayetteville Rotary Club, the Cotillion Club and the Assembly.  He also served on the board of the NC Poultry Federation.  He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, chairman of the board of deacons, elder, clerk of the session, and chairperson of the Board of Trustees.  He also was accorded the honor of Elder Emeritus at First Presbyterian.

Reggie was an avid outdoorsman and had lifelong passions for fresh and saltwater fishing, as well as for hunting.  In addition to hunts in Cumberland County, he particularly enjoyed deer and wild turkey hunting over the past 20 years on remaining acreage of his grandfather’s farm in Barbour County, AL.  He remained an excellent marksman into his 90’s, taking his final hunting trip to Alabama in March of 2015.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife Zula, with whom he had shared 65 years of marriage at the time of her death in December of 2012.  His brother John Reuben Barton, his brother-in-law J. Scott McFadyen, Jr., his sister-in-law Virginia M. Rose, and his niece Brenda C. McFadyen also predeceased him.
