Raymond Braddy Thomason died at his residence on Feb. 3, 2013.
He was born in Dover on July 15, 1925, a son of Bonner Havens Thomason and Byah Hardy Richardson. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Bonner Havens Thomason Jr., Dan Richardson Thomason and Gilbert Macon Thomason; two sisters, Byah Thomason Doxey and Margaret Thomason Huske; and grandson, Raymond Braddy Thomason III.
He is survived by his childhood friend and wife of 63 years, Fannie Longley Thomason; two sons, Henry Havens Thomason and Raymond Braddy Thomason Jr; and two daughters, Kirby Thomason Tyson and DeLean Thomason Brandon. He had nine grandchildren, Navy Lt. Henry Longley Thomason, Jason Marsh Tyson, Caroline Tyson Cox, John Havens Tyson, Henry Culbreath Tyson, Richard Myer Thomason, Beaumont York Thomason, Joseph Green Brandon IV and Emily Elizabeth Longley Brandon; and three great-grandchildren, William Bradley Cox, Charles Hamilton Cox and Caroline Kirby Cox.
Mr. Thomason attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington and enlisted in the Coast Guard on his 18th birthday. He served during World War II in the Coast Guard, as a member of the mounted coastal patrol and was commended for rescue work. Later, he patrolled the waters from Virginia to Georgia searching for enemy submarines.
After four years of service with letters of commendation, he enrolled in Wilmington College (now the University of North Carolina at Wilmington).
In 1946, Mr. Thomason moved to Fayetteville to begin a career at Thomason Plywood Corporation. He served as vice president of Thomason Industries until 1968, when he was named manager of the Lighting Center.
Mr. Thomason was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville for sixty years. He served on the board of deacons and taught Sunday school with his wife. He quietly contributed to charitable, religious and political causes, and was a superb horseman, avid fishermen and gardener.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in First Presbyterian Church, with visitation following in the church parlor. The inurnment will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lafayette Memorial Park.
