George Norman Russ

With profound sadness, the family of George Norman Russ announces his passing on March 13, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, and friend, cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Norm was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Russ; his father, Alonza Russ; and his first wife, Susan Whitley Russ. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Burkarth Russ; his daughters, Gina Russ and Debra Jacobs; his stepsons, Steven Burkarth and Cory Burkarth; seven siblings, Shirley Tew, Joyce Sanderson, Rudy Russ (Sherrie), Elaine White, Anita Gillis (Tom), Bonnie Clark, and Rose Russ; and many other family members and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory.

Norm was known for his keen sense of humor, gracious smile, and jovial spirit. He was a man who never met a stranger and rarely left a social occasion without at least one new friend. His love of God and family was matched only by his love of adventure. On any beautiful day he could be found in his convertible roaming the countryside, taking an impromptu trip to the mountains, or headed for a long weekend at the beach, his favorite place to visit. Dancing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina kept him young at heart, showcasing his immense love of music and bigger-than-life personality at every venue. He found humor in any situation and was a lifelong learner, constantly seeking knowledge in a variety of subjects. His laugh, love, and curiosity will be spoken of and reminisced upon for many years to come.

Norm was a dedicated employee at Eaton, formerly known as Westinghouse, where he worked as a tool and die maker for more than 35 years. An accomplished bass guitarist, Norm was a devoted member of both the Praise Team ensemble at LaFayette Baptist Church and Second Time Around, which played big band music throughout Greater Fayetteville. He was also a loyal member and former vice-president of the Fayetteville Area Shag Association.

A service to celebrate Norm’s remarkable life will be held on Monday, March 17, 2025 at LaFayette Baptist Church at 1:45 p.m., with a visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Norm’s honor to the North Carolina chapter of the American Cancer Society. Norm will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved him.

Services are entrusted to Sullivan’s Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.
