Ms. Margaret Hawley Bucy, 98, of Fayetteville went home to be with her loved ones in Heaven early Friday morning, August 1, 2014. Margaret was known as "Boggy" to her family.
Margaret Elizabeth Hawley was born in Selma, North Carolina on February 27, 1916 to Maurice and Vennie Seawell Hawley. She was the oldest child of a family of seven.
One of her first jobs was selling newspapers at Fort Bragg. Boggy talked about watching the young men marching to war. It was World War II and she often wondered how many made it back. She talked about the victory celebrations in downtown Fayetteville when the war ended. Boggy said it was one of the happiest days of her life. She worked at Victory Mill, later known as Burlington Industries, Lakedale Plant, for almost forty years. She retired early due to the closing of the mills in this area.
Most of her 98 years were spent in the Massey Hill Community. She was a lifetime member of Victory United Methodist Church and active in previous years with the Women's Auxillary. Margaret was a member of the J.E.B. Stuart Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. At the time of her death she was the oldest graduate of Massey Hill High School.
Boggy was an avid supporter of the Operation Inasmuch Bread Bowl Lunch. She celebrated her birthday with family and friends at the event annually.
She is survived by her brother Bobby Hawley and wife Barbara of Fayetteville, sisters-in-law Jackie C. Hawley and Joyce S. Hawley, both of Fayetteville, and Helen C. Hawley of Shreveport, LA. Boggy is also survived by thirteen nieces and nephews, twenty-three great-nieces and great-nephews, and by seven great-great-nieces and great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Myrtle H. Cashwell, her brothers M.A., Jr. , Marvin, Norman F. and recently, Vance C. "Minkey" Hawley.
Her family will receive friends on Monday, August 4, 2014 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM prior to the service at Victory United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM at the church. A private family burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Victory United Methodist Church, 404 Quality Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
