Mrs. Yun Sun Forestier-Hwang, 80, of Fayetteville, NC died on Friday, November 15, 2013.
Yun was born on May 14, 1933 in Masan, Korea to the late Ki Chu Hwang and Pok Sun Kim. Yun is survived by her sister, Chong; three children, Mario, Luis and Carmen; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
As the matriarch of the Forestier-Hwang family, Yun was the role model who taught by example. Her legacy is one of hard work and care for others. In her lifetime she tackled so many challenges. She was born during the Japanese occupation of Korea, endured the Korean War and was faced with the loss of both of her parents at an early age. However, she resolutely kept her head up and lived with dignity. She immigrated to America and settled in Puerto Rico. She learned to read, write and speak English and Spanish and embraced a new unknown Latin-American culture. She worked hard and raised three children, Mario, Luis and Carmen. Ultimately, she owned her own restaurant serving fine Korean cuisine. Yun moved to Fayetteville in 1986 and quickly made many friends in the community and became an early member of the Fayetteville Korean Baptist Church. Her faith in the Lord was unquestionable. She was also famous in her community for helping friends and family in need. She also served many years as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Less known to many is her unselfish help to complete strangers. Yun bravely faced her final challenge with cancer with utmost dignity and quietly passed away in the company of her loved ones on Friday evening. Everyone will miss her as she journeys to meet with God. May God bless her.
