Thelma Butler White, 97, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Heritage Suites.  Her husband of nearly 72 years, Roy White, predeceased her in May 2012.

Thelma was the third of eight children, born in Hayne, NC on October 25, 1917, to the late Buril Butler and Lula Hall Butler.  She was also preceded in death by six of her siblings, Elizabeth B. Sessoms, Carlyle Butler, Curtis Butler, Basil Butler, Irene B. Moffitt, and Christeen B. Davis.  She is survived by her youngest brother, Delano Butler, of Autryville, NC.

Thelma is survived by her daughter, Marcia White (Darrell Ruffin) of Raleigh, and son, Lt Col (ret) Roy A. White, Jr. (Rindy) of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; three grandchildren, Copper White Ferreira (Wesley) of Fort Collins, Colorado, McKinley White Rich (Daniel) of Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, and Roy A. White, III  (Michelle) of Irving, Texas; three great-grandsons, Camden Ferreira, Britton and Beckett Rich and her great-granddaughter, Anniston Ferreira; and dozens of nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren.  

She served God and her church family faithfully, especially children and young people, in many roles – head of the church nursery (Cradle Roll Department), welcoming every new baby to the church family with a home visit and book, and a carnation on the pulpit; Girl’s Auxiliary leader and camp chaperone; Vacation Bible School leader; pulpit committee member; and as a “quiet servant” wherever needed.    

A memorial service to celebrate Thelma’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville, on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2 PM, led by the Reverend Ed Beddingfield.   Visitation will follow the service in Memorial Lounge at the church.  A private interment will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park before the service.  Memorial gifts may be made to the E. Glenn Holt Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson Street, Fayetteville 28301.
