Mrs. Raye King Hensdale, 81, died on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC.
She was born on December 17, 1932 and raised in Fayetteville, NC, near Rockfish, NC. Raye is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.R. King.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Elinor Varnedoe Warren; and infant grandson, William Hensdale Shipp.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard L. (Dick) Hensdale; daughters: Anne Hensdale Hudgens and her husband, Ron; Jane Hensdale Raney and her husband, Bill; Jill Hensdale Shipp and her husband Scott; seven grandchildren: Sarah Hudgens Blanton and her husband Chad; Elizabeth Hudgens Aguilera and her husband Andrew; Whitley Raye Raney; Margaret Hensdale Raney; Olivia Anne Shipp; Christian Abby Shipp; and Ethan John Shipp; sisters, Marcelle Stanley, Vera King, and Lucretia Gilbert; brother, W.R. King, Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Raye graduated from Hoke County High School, Peace College, Meredith College, and received a Masterâs degree from East Carolina University. She worked as a teacher and guidance counselor for many years in the Fayetteville City and Cumberland County school systems. She was an active member of Haymount United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, The Village Chapel in Pinehurst, the Fayetteville Christian Womenâs Club, and the Fayetteville Garden Club.
Her passion was for her faith and her family, and she enjoyed gardening, painting, poetry, reading, crossword puzzles, and music. Raye was a dedicated, tireless, and exceptional individual who always strived for excellence. In the endless projects that she accepted throughout her life, she never shirked from giving her most honest and passionate effort.
After a private burial, a memorial service will be held at Haymount United Methodist Church, 1700 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 29, 2014. The family will receive friends after the service in the Commons Room.
