EASTOVER - Michelle Maynard Hovis died on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital after fighting a valiant battle against ALS for close to four years. She is survived by her husband, Mark, son, Nicholas and daughter, Brittany, all of Eastover.; by her parents, Margi and Bill Maynard and sister, Ann Dixon and her husband, Jay, all living in the Annapolis, MD area; by Darlene and Bill Hovis, Markâs parents of Eastover, and Lou Scaltreto, Markâs birth father who lives with the family and Carrie Stevens, her husbandâs sister and a number of nieces.
She was born in Boston. MA on Dec. 22, 1971, and attended Newton, MA schools through 10th grade when she transferred to Fryeburg Academy in Maine from which she graduated in 1990. Soon after, she began to work as a waitstaff member of a local Friendlyâs restaurant where she remained for almost 10 years. Time out from that job was taken to enlist in the U.S Army, ending her service honorably with the Mass. National Guard. On June 21,1997 she married Mark Hovis of Newton, MA.
In 1999 her family moved to NC and eventually she received her NC license to be an
in-home day care provider. She was very proud of that accomplishment and for the next five years provided care for infants and toddlers in her home.
Soon she became a member of the waitstaff at the Fayetteville Cracker Barrel Restaurant on Cedar Creek Rd. Waitressing was her love, and her smile, even in difficult situations, never waned.
Her fight with ALS began in April 2011, with the final diagnosis in January 2012 and continued right up until her death. Through thick and thin, her smile was everlasting.
At the ALS Walk in Fayetteville this Saturday many of her family and friends will be walking in her memory. There will be a Celebration of Life service at Salem United Methodist Church, 2165 Middle Rd., Eastover on the same day at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome.
Donations in her name may be sent to Salem United Methodist Church.
