Mrs. Martha J. Duell, 90, of Fayetteville, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2015.
Mrs. Duell was born September 18, 1924, in Bruebach, France. Martha and her husband, Colonel Clifford C. Duell, made Fayetteville their home in 1948. Her life in Fayetteville was filled with many civic activities, including the Red Cross, Lady Lions, Womanâs Club of Fayetteville, Mental Health Association, county chairman for UNICEF (18 years), Fayetteville Independent Light Infantryâs âFirst Lady,â Lafayette Society, Fort Bragg Officerâs Wives Club, Botanical Garden, Fayetteville/Saint Avold Sister City Program, French Club, and Camellia Club. She served on the board and presided as president of many of the organizations she supported. Martha was a founder of the Botanical Garden, International Festival, Fayetteville/Saint Avold Sister City Program, Lafayette Society, and the Lafayette Room at the Methodist College library. Raising money for many of Fayettevilleâs organizations, monuments and historic sites was her passion. She was a devoted member of Saint Johnâs Episcopal Church.
Martha was the recipient of many recognitions and awards, among them Fayetteville Citizen of the year and the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Most recently she was honored by her native country, France, with its highest award, the Legion of Honor.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Clifford C. Duell, and her son, Robert M. Duell, a sister, Suzie Descles, a brother, Emile Jund, and a niece, Jacqueline Hycza. She is survived in France by her niece, Claudine Descles, her nephew, Jacky Descles, and grand nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be Saturday, August 29, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Saint Johnâs Episcopal Church, Fayetteville. It will be preceded at 9:15 a.m. with prayer at the Lafayette Statue followed by a procession escorting Marthaâs ashes to the church. Burial will be in the cemetery at Saint Johnâs Episcopal Church followed by a reception at the Kyle House.
