Mrs. Kathleen Reeves Brown, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away on Tuesday, 11 February 2014 at Burke Hospice in Valdese, NC.
She was born on January 13, 1926 in Fayetteville, NC, to the late L. Fred Reeves and Mary Katherine âKateâ Reeves. She is preceded in death by her sister, Lora Mae and brother, Alex. She is survived by brother, Woody, of Swansboro, NC.
A 1943 graduate of Seventy-First High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert J. Brown, upon his return from WWII. They began their marriage in Chicago, IL where he attended school until returning to Fayetteville to work in the ânew technologyâ of air conditioning. They enjoyed 32 years of marriage until his death in 1978. Thereafter, she attended Carolina Bible College to extend her knowledge of the Scriptures.
Kathleen is survived by daughters, Judith (Julian, son-in-law, driver, and Bible buddy) of Fayetteville, and Joanna (granddog, Sam) of Raleigh. She is also survived by grandsons Sonni Dyer (wife, Sandy) of Valdese and Jason Norris (wife, Heather) of Asheboro. Her great grandchildren include Jeremiah Dyer of USMC Iwakuni, Japan, Gideon Dyer of Valdese, and Katherine Juliana Moore Norris of Asheboro. In addition, she is survived by numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She reunited with her first cousin, Elizabeth âBrownieâ Bowditch, her first childhood neighbor, these past ten years while living in Valdese, as well as Martha Reeves, whom she regarded as a sister. She also enjoyed lifelong friendships with her girlhood friends: Doris Tally Brown, Lillian Spears Darby, Katherine Chason McLamb, and Merle Rogers Martin.
She was a woman of strong faith who exemplified her love through acts of service to her family, friends, acquaintances and all children in need. She taught Sunday School to four-year-olds, taught Bible school, raised and canned vegetables, sewed her daughtersâ and their dollsâ wardrobes, and provided baked goods for the school/community events. After her girls had left home, she made crafts, needle pointed, quilted and became a prolific reader. She helped with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and traveled the country with her youngest daughter living in Boston, Albuerque, New Orleans and North Myrtle Beach. She loved the Lord and shared her faith wherever she lived. While living in Valdese, NC , she was active in the Waldensian Presbyterian Church weekly Prayer group, the French circle, genealogy research regarding the Reeves of Madison County and enjoyed her great grandsons, Jeremiah and Gideon. In the last nine months, she has delighted in welcoming her new great-granddaughter, Juliana.
A memorial service is planned for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23rd at Haymont United Methodist Church. Following the service visitors will be received in the church parlor.
