Mrs. Harriett Salley Cromartie, 96, of Fayetteville, NC passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Mrs. Cromartie was born at Ft. Bragg on February 26, 1921, to A.F. Salley and Edna Orrick Salley formerly of Virginia. One of five children, she lived at Fort Bragg for seventeen years and attended the schools on post, Fayetteville Senior High School, Meredith College and the University of Tennessee.
Harriett married her beloved husband, Peter McKellar Cromartie, on November 29, 1941. He passed away on July 28, 1998. They had three children, Alva S. Cromartie, II and wife Sarah of Fayetteville, NC, Susan Cromartie Davis of Port St. Lucie, FL and Peter McKellar Cromartie, Jr. and wife Dorothy of Charleston, SC. There are five grandchildren, Alva S. Cromartie, III, Salley Golden Cromartie, James Shannon Vannoy, William Brandon Vannoy and Peter McKellar Cromartie, III. There are eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Adam Quinn Cromartie.
In addition to her role as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Harriett devoted her life to First Presbyterian Church and the Church Community. She was a teacher and a leader since age sixteen. She worked with and taught small children for many years and, with Peter, served as the churchâs youth advisor. She taught a variety of courses for women at the North Carolina Conference for Presbyterian Women at Montreat. She taught both the Fellowship and Covenant Sunday School Classes for many years.
Harriett served twenty-four years as an Elder. In addition to her many duties of the Session, she served as Moderator of the Worship Committee on a nearly continuous basis. She served as Moderator of Presbyterian Women and was the PW Parliamentarian and a Circle Bible Moderator.
Harriett gave generously of her time and talents. She was commissioned a Certified Lay Preacher by Coastal Carolina Presbytery in 1993 and preached at many Presbyterian churches in this area. She served two years as Presbyterial President and worked on a variety of Presbytery committees.
Harriett served as Chairman of the Women of the Synod of North Carolina, and was a member of Synodâs Council for two years. She was a member of the General Assembly Committee for Women for two years and served several years as an Evangelistic Consultant on the General Assembly level. She was awarded Honorary Life Memberships by Presbyterian Women, First Presbyterian Church and by Presbyterian Women, Coastal Carolina Presbytery for leadership and dedicated service. In recognition of her dedicated service, Harriett was bestowed with the honorable status of Elder Emerita at First Presbyterian Church.
Harriett served eight years as a Trustee for Lees-McRae Presbyterian College. She served her community as President of the Fayetteville Junior Womenâs Club, in the PTA when her children were growing up and as a substitute teacher.
Harriett loved people and counted her family and the church family as the most precious parts of her life.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 10, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the parlor of First Presbyterian Church. The Funeral Service will be conducted at noon in the First Presbyterian Sanctuary with Dr. Donna Fowler-Marchant officiating. Burial will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, 102 Ann Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
