Gloria Jean Stefanski, 89, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, surrounded by her children. She was born in Montville, Connecticut on December 29, 1926 to Gladys Gardner Campbell and Collier Cole Campbell.
As the product of the Great Depression and, like so many of her generation, Mom lived frugally, shunning anything extravagant. If something still functioned, it was good enough and required replacement only when it was clearly on its last legs. Though this outlook was the way she viewed material things, she was quick with the love and caring needed to keep her large family strong. To Mom, family was everything.
The wife of a military man, she often found herself alone to rear her 5 children. She was there with a shoulder to lean on when things got tough, eager with encouraging words.
Mom retired from Sears in her early 60s and enjoyed a long retirement. She travelled with her husband, Hank, and learned to appreciate watching air shows in the mid-west. She loved her sisters and, when asked, would relate stories of what it was like growing up with 5 siblings in Connecticut many years ago.
She loved her home and tending her hydrangeas. She was fond of most things blue. She was an avid reader. She liked a good mystery. As mom got older, TV took on added importance. Shows like Criminal Minds and Law and Order were standouts, the creepier the better. Mom was happiest when she felt warm and could often be found in her favorite chair covered in layers: jammies, jackets, maybe a Snuggie. All blue.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Henry (Hank); son, Guy, formerly of Raleigh, NC, and sisters Betty LaFlamme and Irene Fujiwara of Connecticut.
Left to cherish Jeanâs memory are her children, Robert Stefansky of Leland, NC, Cole Stefansky of Raleigh, NC, Stan Stefansky and wife, Krystyna, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Tracy Stefansky of Cary; grandchildren, Todd, Angela, Christopher, Delany, Emma, Lauren, Lindsey; great grandchildren, Miranda, Lauren, Shannon, and Seth; sisters, Shirley Miceli of New London, CT, Nancy Campbell of Waterford, CT, and Dorothy Stuckey of Newington, CT; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Stefanski of Raleigh, NC.
A memorial ceremony will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
