Mrs. Frances Donald Cochran McFadyen, 91, of Fayetteville, N.C., died February 10, 2014. Daughter of the late James Donald Cochran and Fannie Blount Feild Cochran, she was born on March 7, 1922 in Statesville, N.C.
She fondly remembered a childhood of climbing trees, roller skating, playing basketball, and reading. Mrs. McFadyen graduated from Duke University and then earned a master's degree in social work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She returned to Duke as a medical social worker where she met her future husband, Dr. Oscar Lee McFadyen, Jr. Dr. and Mrs. McFadyen were devoted to one another throughout their 60 year marriage. She supported and cared for her husband so that he could care for his patients. They enjoyed reading, Holden Beach, gardening, and traveling together.
Mrs. McFadyen was an early member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry, was Junior Warden, and taught Sunday school. As a representative of the Diocese of Eastern NC, she served on the Board of Directors of Thompson Orphanage. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Thursday Club, and the Fayetteville Garden Club. An avid bridge player, who enjoyed playing bridge with friends that she held dear. Mrs. McFadyen's life revolved around her church, her family, and her friends. Until her death, she provided an uniquely inspiring example of inner strength, quiet dignity, grace, and faith. Her children cherish that legacy.
Mrs. McFadyen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by three children; Carol Lee McFadyen and husband John Duvall; Donald Jackson McFadyen and wife Katie; Robert Blount McFadyen and wife Sanda of Raleigh; a grandson William Jackson McFadyen and two great grandchildren, Madison Grace McFadyen, and Walker Jackson McFadyen; a cousin Mrs. Martha Neeley and great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Toni Meeks, her assistant, Elaine Harper, and the staff at Hope Mills Retirement Center for their years of care and commitment. .
In celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on February 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to Holy Trinity Church, 1601 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC 28305; the Care Clinic, 239 Robeson St, Fayetteville, NC 28301 or to a charity of your choice.
