Eleanor âEllieâ Jackson (née Eleanor Carol Hopper) died peacefully at home in Fayetteville, NC on April 26, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. She was 78 years old.
Ellie is survived by her husband, Dr. Edward Jackson, of Fayetteville, NC; her daughters, Diane Jackson Schnoor of Winchester Virginia and Kristie Jackson Green of Houston Texas; her sons-in-love, Barry Schnoor and James Green, and her beloved grandchildren, Miranda Schnoor, Ella Schnoor, Megan Green, Alice Green and brothers Robert Hopper of Falls Church, VA.and William Hopper of Nampa ID.
Ellie was born on February 12, 1938 in San Pedro, CA to Anna and Robert Hopper. She graduated from Redlands College in 1959 with a degree in education. She taught school in California, and for the Department of Defense in Germany, where she met and married Edward Jackson, who shared 49 plus happy years of marriage with her. Ellie encouraged her husband to complete his doctorate. Her daughters remember her as a kind, attentive, strong, and generous mother who welcomed their friends into her home and encouraged her daughters and granddaughters to dream big dreams and work to achieve their goals.
For over 50 years, this lifelong member of the Methodist Church in San Pedro, CA, supported her husband in his Roman Catholic faith, helping to teach CCD and volunteering at the Main Post Chapel. Ellie was a quiet hero who selflessly and effectively gave of her time to many community organizations and causes. Active in the PTO, Ellie also faithfully volunteered in the library at Ponderosa Elementary School for more than 20 years. She sewed costumes, made props, and ushered for many years at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre and Fort Bragg Playhouse. Ellie was a strong supporter of the Cumberland County Library and developed all of the questions for the Fayetteville Technical Community College practice rounds for high school Quiz Bowl competition for many years. She and her husband were active in their bowling league, in the Military Officers Association of America, and with the Kiwanis Reading Is Fun Program. Ellie loved to read, write, do puzzles, and travel, and she and Edward fulfilled their dream of visiting all 50 states last fall.
A funeral is scheduled for Saturday April 30th at 10 am at Sullivan Funeral Home on Ramsey Street. Rev. Christopher A. Johnson will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ellieâs life of love and service. Calling hours will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday April 29th at the funeral home.
