Mrs. Dorothy Belle Hughes

Dorothy Belle Hughes, 84, of Fayetteville died peacefully 24 September 2016. Dorothy Hughes was born in Struthers, Ohio on 25 January 1932 to Allen and Edith Knoll Aeppli. After graduating high school, she enlisted and served in the U.S. Army.
While assigned at Fort Lee, Virginia she met and married her late husband of 61years, Vernon Alton Hughes.
Dorothy was exceptionally proud of her service with the Women's Army Corps and was a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. She retired from Long Hill Elementary School Library where she touched the lives of countless children with her love of books and literature. Dorothy kept her home opened to all without bounds or judgment. She encouraged her children, grandchildren and an entire generation of neighborhood kids to read, learn, and be happy. She never spoke a word of discouragement.
Dorothy was known for her sharp wit and perfectly delivered humor. She enjoyed music, genealogy, cooking for others, and a good book. Dorothy was loved and respected by all who met her.
Dorothy will be missed and kept in loving memory by her seven children, Ronald Hughes and his wife Bonnie (Goldsboro, NC), Connie Sumerel and her husband Rick (Greenville, SC), Norma (Poke) Holland and her husband Bill (Sumter, SC), Blake Hughes and his wife Darlene (Fayetteville, NC), Ray Hughes and his wife Di (Aurora, CO), Vernona (Fidge) Aslim and her husband Tanju (Woodbridge, VA) and Brian (Grunts) Hughes and his wife Lisa (Linden, NC), sister, JoAnn DeLisio of Struthers, OH, Netti Lee Williams of Vacaville, CA and Donna Moulder of St. Clairsville, OH. She also leaves behind 11grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Lillian Miles, and three brothers Edward, James and Ronald Aeppli.
The family will conduct a private time of reflection at a later date.
