Dollie Horne Davenport, 87, passed away Saturday, August 31, at Heritage Place Assisted Living Center in Fayetteville, NC. She was born February 8, 1926, to Egbert and Laura Horne.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Julia Belle Starling, Mildred Brisson, and Elsie Gibbs, and her husband, M. Hollon Davenport. She is survived by her children, Debbie Stuart and husband, Ken, of Gastonia, NC, and David Davenport, and wife, Robin, of Fayetteville, NC; three grandchildren, Jennifer Stuart and husband, Jon Bakst, of Chicago, IL, Matthew Stuart and wife, Dawn, of Greensboro, NC, and Sarah Davenport and fiancé, Aaron Zinn, of Cary, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah Stuart of Greensboro, NC.
As a member of what Tom Brokaw has referred to as âThe Greatest Generation,â Dollie left Cumberland County immediately after graduating as Salutatorian from Stedman High School and went to work as a War Department secretary in the Pentagon during World War II. After the war, Dollie worked for a short time as secretary to the manager at the VA Hospital here in Fayetteville, followed by 31 years helping her husband manage the family business, Carolina Armature Works.
Dollie devoted much of her adult life to various church and service organizations. She served on the board for the Cumberland County Association for the Blind for several years, one year as President. She was particularly active with Womenâs Ministries (WM) in the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Dollie served as local WM President for 12 years, as North Carolina WM President for 14 years, and 12 years on the General WM Board, the last one as President. Teaming with her husband, for decades, she spent countless hours and resources supporting foreign missionaries associated with her church denomination, including the building of a childrenâs home in India. She also served on the board of Falcon Childrenâs Home for 21 years, the first ever female appointed to the Board.
Dollie was active in the Fayetteville Lady Lions Club for several years, serving as President twice. She finished out her service to the community as a volunteer at Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital from 1995-2011, and was voted Volunteer of the Year in 2001.
Services will be conducted at Northwood Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church Wednesday, September 4 at 2:00 PM with family visitation before the service from 12:00 to 2:00.
