Mr. Robert Joseph White

Robert  J. White (Bob) was born on July 28, 1920  to J. T. White and Nita Connor White in Norlina, NC.  On December 18, 2014, he died in Fayetteville at the age of 94.

Bob attended Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA where he studied music.  He joined the Air Force during WWII and served in North Africa.  After five years, he left the service and was employed at Fort Bragg and the Department of the Army DIO Supply Division as a Civil Service employee.  He retired after 34  years.

He had a true love for golf and was the founder of the Cape Fear Senior Golf League in the Fayetteville area.  In addition, he was instrumental in the organization and start-up of the Cumberland Sheltered Workshop in Fayetteville – a business providing job training services for the disabled in Fayetteville.  He was a long-term member of Highland Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville NC.

Bob has a surviving son, Robert J. White Jr. of Senatobia, MS and a niece, Betsy Reade Best of Southern Pines .  His wife’s nieces and nephews also loved him dearly.  They are:  Ann Copeland, Dot Hawke, Rob Byers, Reid Morgan, Mary Cam Boudreau, Pat Grimes, Bill Morgan, and Craig Morgan.

Bob was married to the love of his life, Rebecca McClung  Byers for almost 71 years.  He died one day prior to their 71st anniversary.  The lasting bond they shared carried them both to their home in heaven just 2½ days apart.

The family wants to honor the hard work and love shown by the following during Bob’s battle with Alzheimer’s and a subsequent broken hip:  Carillon Assisted Living, CFVH 7th floor orthopedic and 3rd floor ICU nurses and doctors, and the doctors at Cape Fear Orthopedics.  Our hearts have been filled with the love and support from the many friends he and his wife shared from the Morganton Road neighborhood, members of Highland Presbyterian Church, the golfing community, and many more.

Joint funeral services for him and his wife are scheduled at Highland Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC at 11:00 a.m. on January 7, 2015.  Burial will be at a private cemetery adjacent to the Chapel of the Good Shepherd in Ridgeway, NC.  Sullivan’s Funeral Home and Blaylock Funeral Home are handling the funeral details. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Baddour Memorial Center, P. O. Box 97 in Senatobia, MS 38668 for the continued care of their son, Joe White.
