Mr. James William Smith, 74, beloved husband of Jeanne Donald Smith, both longtime residents of Fayetteville and parishioners of Saint Patrick Catholic Church, journeyed home to Christ on Friday, September 19, 2014, while surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was originally from Newark, New Jersey, graduated from both Fayetteville Senior High School and Worth Business College, and served in the United States Air Force. He retired in 2007 after operating as owner of Highland Moving & Storage Co. and W.E. Smith Moving & Storage Co. for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the National Defense Transportation Assoc. and member of the North Carolina Movers Assoc. During his life, Mr. Smith was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a faithful Catholic who loved his church. He was often referred to as âJimboâ by his close friends, and all who knew him well were aware of his passion for sports, especially his enjoyment of baseball and love for the New York Yankeesâ¦a true fan, as pure as they come. Known for his fun sense of humor, he delighted in storytelling and sharing jokes.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice Smith Pocase of Daphne, AL, his parents, Henry J. Smith and Anne C. Smith, and brother, Michael H. Smith of Fayetteville. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Jeanne Donald Smith of Fayetteville, son, James H. Smith of Greensboro, daughter, Jennifer Wright of Fayetteville, daughter, Jeanne Hampton of Framingham, MA, daughter, Jessica Smith of Holly Springs, sister, Colleen Cook of Fayetteville, sister, Andrea Bayne of Greensboro, aunt, Marie Galat of Woodbury Heights, NJ, and cousins, as well as sons-in-law, Bryan Wright, Thomas Hampton, and Peter Pocase, and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at the Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rev. Steven Carlson will officiate.
