Mr. Ira Earl Strack, 93, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 in the Fayetteville VA Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Lake Placid, NY to the late Susan Heinz Strack and Charles N. Strack.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In his years of service, Army servicemen and women had little of the freedoms they now enjoy and he advocated for them to improve the facilities and recreational opportunities available. He made improvements and fostered better ways to care of those who could not leave the Post and his ideas, programs and examples were copied throughout the Army and that process that he started continues today.
After his military service, he was the Manager of Stryker Golf Course at Ft Bragg, NC and after retirement there, worked at the Golf Driving Range on Sycamore Dairy Road in Fayetteville until the age of 91.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Strack of Fayetteville; his son Tom Strack of San Antonio, TX; daughters Barbara Knox of Goshen, IN, Elizabeth of Belmont, NC, and Gail Sanders of Nashville, TN; grandsons Alan and Jason, both of San Antonio, TX; granddaughters Sara Knox, Katie Benham, Theresa and Kim Sanders; and great grandson Aiden Ira (pictured) of San Antonio, TX.
A private service will be held at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service and Crematory in Fayetteville. Online condolences may be sent to sullivanshighland.com.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent to Holy Angels NC (www.holyangelsnc.org) or Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org).
