Mr. Herbert LeRoy "Sonny" Thaggard, Jr.
Mr. Herbert LeRoy Thaggard, Jr., (Sonny), of Raeford , NC , passed away at the age of 81 on October 10, 2013 at Moore Regional Hospital .
He was born on January 3, 1932 in Raleigh , NC . He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1950 and entered the US Navy shortly after graduation. He served on the naval air craft carrier, USS Oriskany. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1987 after 32 years of service as SPO. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Fayetteville .
He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Elizabeth Broadhurst Thaggard; his father, Herbert LeRoy Thaggard, Sr.; a son, Paul Jeffery Thaggard; a sister, Joyce Staton; a brother, Gary McNeill Thaggard, and a grandson, Joshua Caleb Chavis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Margaret (Maggie) Thaggard., one son, Tracy B. Thaggard (wife, Toni) of Raeford; three daughters, Deborah Canupp (husband, Ed) of Apex, Kimberly Chavis (husband, Larry) of Knightdale, Jeanie Abner (husband, Danny) of Stedman; a sister, Betty Korpella of Maryville, Tennessee; three step children, Jeanie Autry (husband, Ronnie) of Dunn, Bill Cifers (wife, Karen) of Elizabethton, TN, Pattie Collins (husband, Arthur) of Falcon. He is survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren. Mr. Thaggard is also survived by his former wife, Joy T. Smith, the mother of his five children and his sister-in-law, Sarah Lynn Thaggard of Fayetteville . He leaves behind his little Maltese companion, Le’Roi. He did love that pup!
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Baptist Church on Main Street in Raeford , NC on Saturday, October 19 with the Reverend Toby Neal officiating. Visitation will be from 1 pm until 1:45 pm with the service beginning at 2 pm . A private burial will follow.
