Martha Elizabeth Clark Sullivan, 79, passed away on Saturday, February 20th at her daughter’s home in Fayetteville after a prolonged illness.
Martha was born in Fayetteville, NC on October 24, 1941 to the late A. Wilbur Clark and Marjorie Moore Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Nancy Culler, her husband, Bob Sullivan, and her beloved son, Todd Sullivan.
She leaves behind her daughters; Gretchen McDuffie and husband Tripp of Raleigh, Karen Mercer and husband Edward of Fayetteville; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Sullivan of Wilmington; grandsons Davis McDuffie, Alex Mercer, Drew McDuffie, and Miles Mercer as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews in the Clark, McFadyen, Moore and Sullivan families.
Martha graduated from Peace College for high school in 1959 and from Duke University for nursing school in 1963. She received her Masters in Nursing from Emory University in 1966 and lived her life as a nurse, an instructor, a working mom, and a life-long learner. She will be remembered by scores of nursing students from UNC Chapel Hill and FTCC.
Her volunteer efforts included service on the Cumberland County Board of Health, the Red Cross Board of Directors, and the steering committee to establish the Learning Center at Highland Presbyterian Church.
A burial service will be held on Friday, February 26th at 1:00pm at Cross Creek Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2:00pm at Highland Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Todd M. Sullivan Endowment at Duke Cancer Institute, 300 W. Morgan St. Suite 1200, Durham, NC 27701.
Services are entrusted to Sullivan’s Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.
