Margaret Olive Newberry, 100, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, April 13, 2013. She was the wife of A. Glenn Newberry, who preceded her in death. They were married for 51 years.
Margaret was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Cumberland County. She was the daughter of Dr. P.W. Olive and Sallie McDonald Williams Olive. She moved with her family from Wade to Fayetteville in 1923, and grew up in the house known as âWestlawn.â She graduated from Fayetteville Senior High School in 1929 and attended Meredith College.
She became a member of Highland Presbyterian Church in 1923, which made her the oldest member of that church in both age and membership. Margaret was an active member of Highland Church, where she served as an elder, former Bible moderator, president of the Women of the Church, Sunday school teacher and circle chairman and was a longtime member of the Ada West Bible class. She was a recipient of the Presbyterian Women Life membership (as was her mother before her) and was very much a Christian throughout her life.
Mrs. Newberry was a past member of the Coterie Book Club, president of the Lady Lions, Colonial Garden Club and was in several bridge clubs. She was a longtime volunteer at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was on the committee to have the hospital chapel built.
A private graveside service will be held at Lafayette Memorial Cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of Highland Presbyterian Church. The family will greet the congregation in the fellowship hall of the church following the memorial service.

She also is survived by eight great-grandchildren, Wallace, Glenn and Hugh Cameron, Cam, Davis and Maggy Watson, and Nancy and Gwyneth Augustine, all of Fayetteville; her sisters, Sarah Olive Lawrence of Sanford and Georgia Olive Davis of Charlotte also survive.
