Katherine Denise (Leftridge) Cannon was born on November 28, 1953, to parents William D. and Mildred G. Leftridge in Andrews, North Carolina. The oldest of 5 children, Kathy learned to cook and clean at a young age. She made her dedication to Jehovah and was baptized in 1969. After graduating form South Florence High School in 1971, she married James Porter and traveled to Germany and around the United States as an Army wife. Kathy had a green thumb and grew all sorts of vegetables every year. The pantry and freezer were always well stocked with the fruits of her labor, and she took pride in caring for her family and always keeping an immaculate home.
She adopted her daughter Christina in 1979 and had her first son, James William Porter in 1983 who only lived for ten days. In 1985, she moved to the Fayetteville area and had her second son, John Curtis Porter. In 1988 her third son, Brandon Keith Porter was born and lived only a week. Kathy worked first as a substitute teacher and then as a teacher’s assistant for approximately 30 years until she retired from the Cumberland County School System. Even years later, her former students would see her in the store and relate what an impact she has on their lives. In 1995, she married Donald Cannon. They were married for 28 years, and he lovingly cared for her until her passing on June 20, 2024- just 3 days shy of their 29th anniversary.
She leaves behind to treasure her memory a husband, Don Cannon, a daughter, Christina Chisholm (Brandon), a son John, daughters-in-law Ashley and Shannon, granddaughters Hayden, Scarlett, and Samarah, a brother, Daniel Leftridge (Melinda), in addition to nieces, nephews, spiritual brothers and sisters, and friends.
A memorial service is planned for 10am on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 3265 Cumberland Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
