Joseph J. "Jay" Thompson

Joseph J. (Jay) Thompson Jr. December 13, 1937 ~ March 24, 2018 (Age 80) Joseph J. Thompson Jr., known to all as “Jay”, 80, of Fayetteville, passed away on March 24, 2018.

He was born in Roanoke Rapids NC on December 13, 1937, to the late Joseph J. Thompson Sr. and Dereatha Daughtry Thompson. A resident of Cumberland County since 1967, Jay taught Marketing and Distributive Education for over 20 years, with most of those at Southview Senior High School. He was a graduate and fan of East Carolina University and a long-time member of Saint Matthews United Methodist Church on Hope Mills Road.

Left to cherish Jay’s memory is his beloved wife of over 55 years, Barbara; son, Jay Thompson and wife Robin; daughters Katherine Rowe and husband David, and Carol Hernandez and husband Tom; grandchildren, Sean Thompson, Courtney Thompson, Ashley Thompson, Katherine Beaton, Emily Wright, Tommy Hernandez, and Matthew Hernandez; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte Thompson and William Thompson.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 10am on April 7, 2018, at Saint Matthews United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, officiated by Pastor Matt Seals.

The family will welcome friends with a time of remembrance in the church fellowship hall following the service.

A burial of remains will occur later at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. In lieu of flowers, friends may consider making a donation to Saint Matthews United Methodist Church, 202 Hope Mills Road, Fayetteville NC 28304 or their favorite charity.
