Jane Rembert Foxworth Suggs went home to be with her Lord on Monday, June 3, 2024 at her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving daughters.
Jane was born in Bishopville, South Carolina on November 14, 1934 to the late John Edwin (Fox) and Myrtle Stuckey Foxworth, Sr. She is predeceased by her husband Raymond Nelson Suggs, Jr. and her brother and sister-in-law John Edwin and Virginia Davis Foxworth, Jr.
Growing up, Jane enjoyed riding the bicycle that her father made for her. She also loved playing with Suzy, the doll her mother gave her as a birthday present. She sang in the choir at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in her youth and learned to play the piano. Jane graduated in 1953 from Bishopville High School. In 1957, she graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with a major in Secretarial Sciences. It was her great joy to graduate from USC on the same day as her older brother, John, who earned his journalism degree following his military service.
After college, Jane accepted a position in the Office of the Attorney General of South Carolina. Her family played matchmaker for Jane and Raymond, who was friends with one of her cousins. One of their first dates was to attend the 1959 Billy Graham Crusade in Charlotte. After her marriage to Raymond, she spent many years as a devoted wife and mother both in Hartsville and their later move to Fayetteville where they established a loving home for their family. As the girls grew older, Jane returned to work at the World for Christ Evangelistic Association. She then worked as the Church Secretary for Village Drive Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Southern Baptist Secretaries Association.
Jane was an active member of Village Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Girls-in-Action (GA’s). She was a member of the Seekers and Faithful Workers Sunday School classes, where she enjoyed the fellowship she found there with her good friends. Her love of singing around the house continued throughout her life, especially her favorite hymns. She was not shy about asking others to join her in song. Her well-worn Bible is evidence that she loved studying God’s word. She came to know the Lord early in life and lived out her faith.
Jane enjoyed making crafts, especially sewing, painting, and card-making. Her favorite times were spent with her family and friends, enjoying each other’s company and talking about family history. Jane was a stickler for the details when telling a family story and remembered many of the details others had forgotten. Family reunions at her parents’ home and at the beach were cherished times for her. She was an avid reader and kept her mind sharp with puzzles. Jane enjoyed putting together shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child each year with her daughters and praying for the children that would receive them.
Jane is survived by her daughters, Nancy Suggs and Linda Suggs, both of Fayetteville; nephews, Dr. David (Patty) Foxworth, Don (Anne) Foxworth and niece Brenda (Paul) Weiland as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
The Celebration of Jane’s life will be held at Village Baptist Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Friday, June 7, 2024, at 1 p.m., with the family receiving visitors from noon until 1 p.m. in the Worship Center. The Reverend Nick Smith will be officiating the service. Burial will be at a later date at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, South Carolina, with Dr. David Foxworth officiating.
Memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse for Operation Christmas Child, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-3000 or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for Bibles at 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201-0001.
