James "Jack" J. Barnes, 89, of Southern Pines, died Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Jack was born on June 16, 1928, in Angier. He graduated from North Carolina State University and served in the United States Air Force. After four years of service to his country he became president of J.J. Barnes Inc. in Fayetteville until retirement. He was an active member and Sunday school teacher at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. He served Campbell University on the Board of Trustees, the Presidential Board of Advisers, and the Campbell University Foundation.
For the last four years, he and his wife, Doris, resided at Belle Meade retirement community in Southern Pines. During those years, Jack served on the board of St. Joseph of the Pines.
Jack’s strength and humor were a blessing to all around him. He was an avid hunter and passionate outdoorsman. His love for God and family guided each of his days and is his lasting legacy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris Pleasant Barnes, and two daughters, Julia Barnes Sherron and her husband, Frank, and Beth Barnes Dent and her husband, Daniel. He was known as “Papa” by his six grandchildren, Haynes Sherron III, Neill Sherron, Jamie Rothrock, Kelsey Burrow, Brianna Virtue, and Brandon Dent, and his two great-grandchildren Sloane Everly Virtue and Jackson Barnes Rothrock.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
