Mrs. Hilda Broglin Kirby, 94, of Fayetteville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 3, 2023, at Heritage Place.
Mrs. Kirby was born on February 4, 1929, in Harnett County. She was predeceased by her mother, Mrs. Erma Wilson Broglin Plocke and her father, James D. Broglin. She was also predeceased by her loving and beloved husband, Kenneth Karl Kirby.
She is survived by her cousins, Una Nulty Horstman and husband Dan of Delphos, Ohio, Linda O’Quinn and husband Luther of Lillington, Elizabeth Wilson of Fayetteville, Edward Wilson of Hope Mills, and Woody Wilson and wife Elayne of North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Mrs. Kirby’s career spanned a wide and varied path. Among her experiences, she was an insurance agent, civil service employee, bookkeeper, financial officer for Fayetteville Presbytery, and entrepreneur as owner of a craft store.
She received her education in Harnett and Cumberland County schools and at Pineland Junior College and Campbell University. She also studied voice in Germany for two years.
Mrs. Kirby’s community service included the Fayetteville and National Federation of Business and Associational Women’s Clubs, the Fayetteville Insurance Women, the Fayetteville Chapter of the National Association of Accountants, and the Chaminade and NC Association of Music Clubs.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, where she served on the Witness Committee which allowed her to be involved in her passion for local and foreign missions. Hilda's most rewarding service came from her interest and work in the mission field. On two trips to Mexico, she helped build houses. In Pascagoula, MS, she participated in reconstruction work after Hurricane Katrina. On a mission trip to Zimbabwe, Africa, at the age of 72, Hilda traveled alone to represent her church in the dedication of a new sanctuary for a Presbyterian church funded almost totally by the congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville. Hilda was Moderator of the Hispanic Ministry Committee, leading the efforts of her church and Coastal Carolina Presbytery to establish a Hispanic ministry in the Fayetteville area. She also served for many years in the Chancel choir as a soloist, and the Bell choir. Her service included the Office of Deacons, Elder, and was honored by being awarded the status of Elder Emerita.
Hilda was a truly noble servant- dedicated, willing, and unselfish, reflecting her love for her family, her church and for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
A service of worship will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 2 pm with Dr. Mike Garrett and Dr. Jay Coker officiating. A private burial will follow. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 pm in the Parlor at First Presbyterian.
