George Walker Bender, 83, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend died peacefully on October 7, 2023, after a brief illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Fayetteville, George graduated from Staunton Military Academy and later from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, George joined his father as a pharmacist at Bender’s Drugs at various locations throughout Fayetteville.
George loved nothing more than having his feet in the sand and tossing a line in the water, studying the Bible, tending his many camellias and following his beloved Tar Heels. He was known far and wide as a gifted raconteur. We will miss the twinkle in his eye and his wry sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Robert Alves officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Kyle House.
George was predeceased by his parents, Edith and Walker Bender and daughter, Deborah Deane “DeeDee” Hairfield.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Elizabeth “Buffy” Anderson (Mike), Adair Tamplin Woronoff (David) and Tom Tamplin (Michelle); brother, Richard Bender(Johnnie); and eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in memory of George to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Salvation Army.
