Dr. Weldon Huske Jordan, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Dr. Jordan was born Feb. 14, 1924, son of Dr. William Stone and Louise Huske Jordan. He was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Tau Omega. He received his medical degree from Harvard School of Medicine in 1947. He did his internship at Geisinger Medical Center. He then did a fellowship in pathology at UNC School of Medicine. He began his residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. His training was interrupted when he was called into service with the Army's 24th Division in Korea. He received three stars and letters of commendation. He returned to the U.S. Naval Hospital at Pasadena, Calif. Following his service, he resumed his medical training at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He began practicing internal medicine in Fayetteville in 1954 with Dr. Albert Stewart. He was a visiting clinical professor of medicine for UNC from 1958 to 1989. Dr. Jordan was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a member of the American College of Physicians and American Society of Internal Medicine, and a member of the executive council of the North Carolina Society of Internal Medicine. He served as president of Cumberland County Medical Society and as chief of staff for Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Highsmith Rainey Hospital. In August 1999, the North Carolina Medical Society honored him as a Hero in Medicine. He was a board member of the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, a member and former vestryman of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and a donor of a family fund to the Cumberland Community Foundation. Dr. Jordan was a strong advocate for education and the cultural resources of his community. An ardent environmentalist, he was a charter member of the North Carolina Nature Conservancy, Sandhills Land Trust, North Carolina Botanical Gardens and Cape Fear Botanical Garden. He also was an avid worker in his own garden and bird sanctuary.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lynn Haigler Jordan; son, Dr. Weldon Huske Jordan Jr. and his wife, Colleen, daughter, Caroline, and son, Timothy; son, Dr. Richard Montgomery Jordan and his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Natalie; son, Dr. Stuart Harrington Jordan and his wife, Sheryl, and sons, Benjamin, Samuel and Zane; son, Dr. Peter Manning Jordan and his wife, Rebecca, daughters, Sarah and Julia, and son Matthew.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Ray Brown. A reception will follow in the church parish hall. Memorial donations may be made to the Cumberland Community Foundation, 308 Green St., Fayetteville, NC 28301; or to Cape Fear Botanical Garden, 536 N. Eastern Blvd., Fayetteville, NC 28301.
A private family interment will be in the family plot in Cross Creek Cemetery.
