Doctor Paul Anthony Vieta, Col., MC, USAR, 75, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on Sunday April 10, 2016 at his home in Fayetteville, NC. Dr. Vietaâs life was a celebration of hard work and devotion to his family, patients and country.
Dr. Vieta was born July 8, 1940, in New York City, to parents Henrietta Countiss Vieta and Dr. John O. Vieta. He graduated from Columbia College and attended the New Jersey College of Medicine. After graduation from medical school, he did a residency in OB/GYN in New York City. He then served in the U.S. Army on active duty from July 1971 through October 1975. He moved to Fayetteville, NC, in 1975 and joined the Highland OB/GYN Clinic while also remaining in the Army Reserves. He was called to active duty for Operation Desert Storm in August 1990 and served until July 1991. He retired from the Army Reserves in July 2000 with the rank of Colonel.
During his lifetime, he delivered over 11,000 children. He loved his profession with a passion and was a natural teacher. He was awarded the Distinguished Professorâs Award from Duke University several times. He cared greatly for his patients and was always available to them.
Dr. Vieta was an avid traveler throughout his life, and he had a great love of history, reading and the New York Yankees.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Leila; his four children, Dr. Kathryn Pruden and husband Charles, Amy Vieta, Dr. Paul Vieta, Jr. and wife Sarah, and Mrs. Laura Richardson and husband Kevin; and his eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters and his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service. There will be a funeral mass at St. Patrickâs Church at 11 am on Friday, April 15, 2016. Burial with military honors will be in Fairfield, Connecticut at a future date.
