Dr. Joe B. Meek, 79, passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, while surrounded by his family at Village Green Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 16, 1936, in Bartow, Fla., to the late Mr. and Mrs. Allan and Mary Meek.
Dr. Meek received a degree in pharmacy from the University of South Carolina before earning his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Charleston, where he specialized in orthopedics. He was the founder of Cape Fear Orthopedics. He served on the Cape Fear Valley Hospital System Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989. He proudly volunteered his time to serve as the team physician for Seventy First High School, as well as South View High School in the 1990s. He was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church who enjoyed traveling, flying, tennis and golf. He completed the New York City Marathon in 1978 and 1980. One of his passions was investing in the stock market.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Meek of Fayetteville; daughter, Karen Meek of Columbia, S.C.; sons, David Meek of Pittsburgh and Jerry Meek of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service in Fayetteville. A funeral service officiated by the Rev. Dr. Donna Fowler-Marchant will be conducted at noon Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, in the chapel of Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service, with a private family burial at a later time.
