Dr. James Samuel Hall, III, was born in Fayetteville, NC, on July 19, 1931, and died at home surrounded by the love of his family on August 23, 2015. A person of great faith, Dr. Hall was devoted to his family and his community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Samuel Hall, Jr., and Mary Gold Scarborough Hall and his only son James Samuel Hall, IV.

After graduating from Fayetteville High School, Dr. Hall attended Duke University where he received his BA degree and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his education at Duke Medical School and remained there for his internship and residency in Pediatrics.

Under the Berry Plan, Dr. Hall served in the U.S. Navy at the U.S. Naval Hospital #1 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he was Chief of Pediatrics. Returning to Fayetteville, he entered private practice with Dr. Sam Wright at Highland Pediatrics.

Dr. Hall was known for his kind and gentle manner, his attention to medical detail and his compassion for helping others. He had a subtle wit and endearing sense of humor. For over 40 years until his retirement, he maintained an active pediatric practice, where he was admired by patients and physicians alike. He was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cumberland County Medical Society, and the North Carolina Pediatric Society. He served on the Board of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, the Cumberland County Public Health Department, the Fayetteville Area Health Education Committee, Smart Start, and the United Way.

An accomplished pianist, Dr. Hall had a lifelong love of classical music. He served on the Board of the North Carolina Symphony and was an ardent supporter of the Fayetteville Symphony. Following his retirement, he became a Master Gardner and finally had time to plant perennials and tend his roses. A longtime member of Hay Street United Methodist Church, he served on the Board of Trustees and on the Church Council.

Dr. Hall is survived by his wife, Mary Harrison Hall and four daughters:  Mary Melda Hall Kizer and husband James Madison Kizer of Fayetteville; Elizabeth Hall Bridges and husband Robert Wilson Bridges of Charlotte; Virginia Hall Carlan of Winston-Salem; and Sarah Hall Beasley and husband James Gregory Beasley of Fayetteville. He is survived by ten grandchildren: James Samuel Kizer and Mary Madison Kizer of Fayetteville; Hannah Caroline Bridges, Benjamin Hall Bridges, Elizabeth Owen Bridges, Solopino Gbeway Bridges and Stewart Moyenneh Bridges of Charlotte; Matthew Harrison Carlan of Winston- Salem; and Katy Harrison Beasley and Caroline Elizabeth Beasley of Fayetteville.

Special thanks is extended to the following caregivers who became friends: Sherrill Morrison, Cathy Sheffield, Sabrina Underwood, Glenda Williams, and LaTonya Herring.

The family will receive guests at Sullivan’s Highland Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.  from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at Hay Street United Methodist Church in downtown Fayetteville on
Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. R. Carl Frazier and Rev. David J. Blackman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hay Street United Methodist Church, 320 Hay Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
