Dr. James Thomas "Tom" Morley 70, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born at home on December 6, 1942, Baltimore, MD, to the late Robertine McNeel Morley and William Logan Morley. He was also preceded in death by a brother William Morley and a sister Kaye Quinn.
Dr. Morley from the time he was in high school his desire was to be a philosopher. He was blessed with the ability to teach philosophy for over 42 years. Dr. Morley was devoted to his students and went above beyond to ensure their success by tutoring on Saturday mornings. He was an avid bird watcher and creatively incorporated his love of birds into teaching philosophical concepts.
Dr. Morley earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts and Masters Degree from the University of Maryland. He also earned his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Morley has taught Philosophy for the past 15 years at Fayetteville Technical Community College. He has also taught at Fayetteville State University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, University of North Carolina at Ashville, and the University of Tennessee. Dr. Morley organized and advised the Fayetteville Technical Community College Intercultural club. The club's fundraising activities were an integral part of the critical thinking classes, and all proceeds from the fundraisers were donated to local charities.
Dr. Morley is survived by his loving wife of almost 20 years Charlotte Holbrook Morley, of the home; daughter Ruth Lilly, and granddaughter Adriana, of Charlotte, NC; son Jared Haggert of North Charleston, SC; brother Robert Logan Morley, of St. Augustine, FL; his nephews Adam and Logan Morley, of FL, and niece Dawn Thiess, and husband Mark, of Essex, MD; brother-in-law Stan Holbrook, of Fayetteville, NC; and a host of friends and colleagues.
All services for Dr. J. Thomas Morley will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Dr. J. Thomas Morley memorial scholarship fund to the FTCC Foundation.
