Col. Hercilio Vazquez, USA, (Ret), 82, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in Fayetteville. He was born on January 23, 1931 in Yauco, Puerto Rico to the late Hercilio and Esperanza Vazquez.
During the Korean War, he served as an artillery lieutenant, earning two Bronze Stars. After the war, he was a 1959 dental school graduate of the University of Kansas City. He reentered the Army in 1961, and served a career as a dentist, retiring in the Fayetteville area in 1978. He then served as a Civil Service dentist at Fort Bragg, before retiring in 1998.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deloris Ann Newell Vazquez, sons Eddie Vazquez and wife Michele of Richmond, Missouri, Tony Vazquez of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Freddie Vazquez of Clearwater, Florida, daughters Lilia Vazquez-Hunter and husband Fred Hunter of Charlotte, and Linda Vazquez of Fayetteville, and grandson Andrew Hunter of Charlotte.
A memorial service to commemorate the life of Hercilio Vazquez-Torres will be held at Sullivanâs Funeral Service, 610 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be from 1:45 â 2:45 PM preceding the service.
