EASTOVER- On Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, another devoted and righteous graduate of the school of life was received by our Father in Heaven. During her final days, Dorothy Edwards Cox "Dottie" Lawrence received excellent and compassionate care at Bethesda Health Care Facility in Eastover.
She was born born June 30, 1920, to Joseph and Fannie McCorquodale Edwards in Falcon. She spent all of her life as a resident of the Falcon and Eastover communities. Dottie was a 37-year retiree of civil service, having spent most of that time as a procurement officer with Post Engineers on Fort Bragg. She developed many lasting friendships during her professional career in the Fayetteville community. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her friends and being involved in civic and church related activities. She was a charter member and past officer of the Dig-A-Bit Garden Club and a member of Salem United Methodist Church for more than 40 years, where she was most notably an officer and active participant of United Methodist Women.
Her best legacy was mailing cards and notes to the sick and shut-in for many years. Her family will miss her ability to recall genealogy and relationships from memory. Dottie knew who was related to whom in an uncanny, almost-impossible way. Her country cooking already has been missed, but the red velvet cakes can never be replaced.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Linwood and Z.C. "Zeke" Edwards; a sister, Virginia E. Holland; and a sister-in-law, Annie C. Edwards.
She is survived by her sister, Eloise E. Murphy of Fayetteville; two sons, Joe Cox and wife Judy of Vander, and Greg Lawrence and wife Patricia of Eastover. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Marie Edwards of Greensboro; and a special nephew, Clyde Edwards and wife Gwen of Eastover. Though not by blood, "Granny Dot" also claimed and loved two grandchildren, Kevin Pate and wife Sarah, and Melanie P. Norton and husband Ritchie. There are also five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who she loved as her own.
A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. at the church with Dr. Bill Snotherly and the Rev. Melinda Ivey officiating. Interment will follow in Falcon Cemetery in Falcon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem UMC Building Fund, 2165 Middle Road, Eastover, NC 28312; or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Ave., 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851. Services entrusted to Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory of Fayetteville.
