Mrs. Dorothy Edge DeVore Bishop, 90, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, peacefully in her home in the Grayâs Creek community.
She was born Nov. 10, 1922, to Ione Yarborough and Jasper Edge. A 1939 graduate of Grayâs Creek High School, she attended Louisburg College and East Carolina Teacherâs College (now ECU) in North Carolina. While at East Carolina, at a weekend dance, she met a handsome Marine from Camp Lejeuene, Charles Albert âChuckâ DeVore, a native of Topeka, Kan. They were married Sept. 6, 1945.
Dot was an elementary school teacher in Bladenboro schools from 1943 to 1945; Camden Road Elementary in Fayetteville; and taught first grade many years at Grayâs Creek School until her retirement in 1971, after the death of her husband Chuck. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital from 1971 to 2002, and was a member of Grayâs Creek Womenâs Club. In 1988, she remarried. She married Marion P. âBillâ Bishop, a widower. A lifelong member of Marvin United Methodist Church in Grayâs Creek, she served many years as pianist and organist until 2001. She was a constant member of the Grayâs Creek community, visiting the bereaved, the sick and elderly with a smile and homecooked food, a true âSouthern lady.â
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Ione Edge of Grayâs Creek; brother, Cecil Edge of Elizabethtown; and husband, Chuck DeVore and Bill Bishop.
She is survived by her children, Greg DeVore of the home, Kathy DeVore and spouse, Dough Reece, of High Point; and Jeff and wife, Judy DeVore of Grayâs Creek; grandchildren and their spouses, Jill and Mike Riddle of Grayâs Creek, Jeremy and Holly DeVore of Bermuda Run, Jordan DeVore of Charlotte, Brandon and Kelly DeVore of Suffolk, Va., and Zach DeVore of Frederick, Md.; great-grandchildren, Danielle and spouse, David Barco, Dylan Riddle, and Michael and Braelyn DeVore; nieces and their spouses, Janice and Bobby Guyton of Elizabethtown, Anne Cecile and Dan Nye of Cherry Grove, S.C.; and nephew, Wayne and wife, Anita Edge, of Elizabethtown.
The family would like to thank Dorothyâs wonderful caregivers, Mildred Glover, Ann Rushing, Sheila Haire and Annie Jackson for their many hours of devoted service; United Health Care Hospice; and Dr. David Stewart of Fayetteville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dorothyâs name to Marvin United Methodist Church, 6740 N.C. 87 South, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, in Marvin United Methodist Church cemetery, followed by a celebration of Dorothyâs life in the fellowship hall of the church.
