FAYETTEVILLE - Donald L. Lockhart, 64, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012. He was born Aug. 31, 1947, in Lorain, Ohio. Mr. Lockhart was a highly decorated Army and Vietnam War veteran. As a Sky Soldier of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, he served in Okinawa and Vietnam from 1965 to 1969. Prior to his retirement from the Army in July 1987, he also served in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 18th Airborne Corps, as well as the Army Recruiting Command and other honorable units. While serving his country, he received many medals and citations, which included four Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.
Following his retirement, Don worked in the retail industry and then became an employee of Cumberland County Schools, working with students with special needs. He also found great joy in his membership and mission trips with Haymount United Methodist Church. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and teacher.
He will be missed and forever in the hearts of his family, who are his wife of 33 years, Christie; his children, Angela and Daniel; and his grandchildren, Kayla and Ian, all of Fayetteville; as well as many friends, colleagues and students.
A celebration of Don's life, to include full military honors, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2012, in Haymount United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Woodrow W. Wells officiating.
