Catharine Rodgers Corbin, 97, of 745 Victorian Place, Fayetteville, NC, formerly of 207 Washington Street, Huntingdon, PA, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013.
Mrs. Corbin was born Catharine Glasgow Rodgers, the daughter of the late John M. and Clara (Simpson) Rodgers, on August 24, 1915, in Huntingdon, PA. She married Maxwell H. Corbin on January 2, 1942. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1986.
Surviving are her daughter, Anne Corbin Matlack and husband, Robert, of Fayetteville, NC and her son, Maxwell Henry Corbin, Jr. and wife, Martha, of Milford Center, Ohio; five grandchildren: R. Kepler Matlack, and wife, Karen; John S. Matlack, and wife, Jennifer; Maxwell H. Corbin, III, and wife, Laurel; Catharine Matlack Drewry, and husband, William; and Marshall M. Corbin, and wife, Caroline. Also surviving are ten great grandchildren: Jacob Matlack, James Matlack, Hunter Corbin, Abigail Corbin, Lauren Matlack, Julianne Corbin, Anna Matlack, William Corbin, Mitchell Corbin, and Virginia Drewry.
Mrs. Corbin was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters: J. Simpson Rodgers, Elizabeth (Rodgers) Steiner, and Mary (Rodgers) Geissinger.
Mrs. Corbin attended the Huntingdon schools, graduating in the class of 1933. After receiving her teaching degree from Juniata College in Huntingdon, she began her teaching career at the River School in Entriken, PA, a one-room country school house where her duties included arriving early to start the fire and bring water from the well. After leaving teaching to raise her two children, Mrs. Corbin resumed her career as the kindergarten teacher at Woodcock Valley and Alfarata Schools, retiring in the late 1970âs.
Mrs. Corbin was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Huntingdon, active in the Standing Stone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and volunteered with numerous civic organizations. In 2004, she relocated to North Carolina to be near her daughter and her family. At the time of her death as the result of an unfortunate fall, Mrs. Corbin was living independently, enjoying her family and her many hobbies, especially playing bridge.
A memorial service for Mrs. Corbin will be held in the sanctuary of Highland Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, NC on Friday, June 28, 2013, at 2:00 PM. Friends will be received at the family residence at 712 Athens Avenue following the service.
Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Huntingdon, PA at the convenience of the family.
