Belvin âLeeâ Walters, Sr., 66 of Fayetteville died Thursday January 5, 2012.
Lee was born October 5, 1945 and raised in Durham County. Following his enlistment in the US Air Force, he continued to serve his community as a member of the Durham Police Department until his retirement. As a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of Police, he held many offices including NC State President, during which time he was instrumental in implementing legislation to assist children of officers fallen in the line of duty. For his dedication, he subsequently received the highest civilian honor of the state, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He currently held office in FOP Lodge #8. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Phoenix #8 A.F. & A.M., as well as the 20th commandery of Knights Templar. He enjoyed his retirement by traveling, collecting art, riding his Harley, spending time with friends and family, especially the Fourth of July.
He is survived by wife Diana, children Misty Lee, Belvin Lee, Jr. (Tonya), and Brandon Penebacker; Grandchildren, Nfynitie and Kmeion Walters; two sisters Hilda Pulley (Otis) and Bobbie Dixon; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents Lorenza and Mary Nowell and two brothers JD Britt and Haywood Honeycutt.
The family will receive friends at Sullivanâs Highland Funeral Service and Crematory Monday January 9, 2012 from 1-3 pm. The funeral will be held at 3pm at the funeral home, with Chaplain William McCoy officiating. A private interment will follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
